Before last season, Beavercreek High School football coach Scott Clodfelter and his staff took a long, hard look at their personnel and decided they wanted a new offense.
Skilled runner Gabe Henry and athletic wide receiver Brad Sundstrom led a group of potentially strong runners and blockers at the edges. So Clodfelter sought out the team’s new offense and found it from a Division II college coach.
That offense, which Clodfelter described as a triple option with a greater passing threat, has led to 102 points in the Beavers’ first two games, including a 42-13 victory against Carroll on Friday, Sept. 4, in the Dayton Daily News Game of the Week.
Now 2-0 heading into a Week 3 game against Sidney, Beavercreek finds itself in a position similar to last season, when the Beavers won their first five games but missed the playoffs. So far, while the defense has also played strong in allowing zero points to Stebbins and 13 to Carroll, the offense has put up the eyebrow-raising numbers.
“The biggest thing is our attention to detail,” Clodfelter said. “It’s our second year running the same system, so I think everyone is becoming more comfortable. We’re doing little things like making sure our angles are correct, making sure the blocking is more proficient, just executing the details.”
